IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY

There are thousands of complaints with the DOT every year pertaining to disastrous experiences with moving companies. I am sure you have heard about, seen on TV, or read on the Internet about the fraud that occurs in the moving industry. Most times you have no proof in order to recover your belongings. Many families and businesses suffer loss due to:

  • Fraud
  • Damage
  • Theft
  • Or a variety of other bad experiences with a moving companies
  • The list goes on and on, we know what you’re thinking I’m covered for all of this and more. However, are you ready to answer the unpleasant questions that the Police, DOT, Consumer Affairs, Attorneys, Small Claims Court, or insurance agent is sure to ask you? Alternatively, will you be prepared with a video, digital photo and written inventory to prove what you owned and speed up the recovery process?

Imagine this Scenario (the Problem):

You need to relocate or move contents of your business or home. You hire a moving company. They tell you one thing when you sign the contract. Then, once the move is in process and they are about to deliver your items to you an unexpected surprise comes up. One of the following happens:

  • The movers steal some of your belongings
  • Some of your belongings are damaged and the moving company claims they were damaged to begin with and refuse to take responsibility.
  • The moving company tells you that you owe a lot more than the agreement and holds your belongings hostage, or worse, auctions off your belongs because of an unpaid bill that you never agreed to.

These scenarios happen quite often. It is a reputation of the moving business due to some fraudulent companies or loopholes that allow some of these companies to ruin your life unless you submit to their demands. You have no control because they possess all your belongings and you have no proof. The following can happen with no proof:

  • The moving company requires a high payoff just to deliver your own belonging that you may not even be able to afford or could have a higher cost than the cash value of your belongings. However, you can not replace sentimental value.
  • You could experience devastating costs to replace all your belongings
  • You could incur high costs to just live while your belongings are being held hostage
  • A long time period of stress and efforts due to trying to just get your life back

Regardless of how much insurance you may have you still need to have an accurate list of your possessions. Replacing possessions that are destroyed or lost due to fire, hurricane and other natural disasters, theft or vandalism is a difficult and time consuming process. Insurance companies, Police, DOT, Consumer Affairs, Attorneys, Small Claims Court require that you provide them with a complete list of items that were lost or damaged. Our portfolio has printed listing of items with descriptive information and serial numbers, cross-referenced digital photographs, and complete digital video footage that provides a complete record so that you will be able to submit claims for full reimbursement.

  • Can I do my own inventory?

Maybe. Some homeowners do their own inventories.  Most however have this on a "to do" list that may get started, but usually is not fully completed.  We encourage homeowners to have an inventory and will provide information that can assist plus many insurance companies provide forms and information as well.

  • Do you provide appraisal services?

Yes.  We arrange for expert appraisers to provide accurate and well documented appraisals of antiques, fine art, silver and china, rare books, jewelry and precious stones and other family heirlooms.  You can select only appraisals of particular items or take advantage of our team approach which combines a complete inventory and appraisal of whatever items need specific documentation.

  • Will my information be safe and secure?

Absolutely. Our inventory or appraisal information is given only to the homeowner.  We recommend that a confidential, security copy of your inventory or appraisal be kept on our safe deposit box.  This back-up information will never be reviewed or released to anyone without your written permission.

  • How long will it take to complete the inventory?

For a standard home, it will take approximately three to four hours for the onsite portion of inventory depending on the amount of property to be documented and availability of information.  The homeowner should be available during this time.

  • Will we be able to update the inventory?

Yes. You can do this in several ways. The format of the materials are designed to be easy to update.  You can write in additional information on existing items or add new entries in the Addendum section in your portfolio at any time.  During the first year you can send us information on additions or changes and we will update your complete record at no charge.  We also offer an annual update service for a nominal charge.
